What to Bring to Your Visit

To make your visit as smooth as possible, please bring the following: a valid photo ID, all insurance cards (medical and vision), a complete list of your current medications (including eye drops), any referral paperwork from your eye doctor, previous eye records or imaging (OCT scans, fluorescein angiography), and sunglasses for after your appointment, as your eyes will likely be dilated.

Insurance & Payment

Elman Retina Group accepts most major medical insurance plans, including Medicare, Medicaid, BlueCross BlueShield, Aetna, Cigna, United Healthcare, and many others. Payment is expected at the time of service for any copays, coinsurance, or deductibles. We accept cash, check, and all major credit cards. If you have questions about your coverage, please call our billing department at 410-686-3000 before your appointment.

Your First Visit

Your first visit will typically last 1 to 2 hours. After checking in, our technicians will perform a series of diagnostic tests, which may include visual acuity testing, eye pressure measurement, OCT imaging, and fundus photography. Your pupils will be dilated so the doctor can examine your retina thoroughly. After the exam, your retina specialist will review the findings with you, explain your diagnosis in plain language, and discuss treatment options. We encourage you to bring a family member and to write down any questions you'd like to ask.

Preparing for Your Appointment

Please arrive 15 minutes early to complete any remaining paperwork. Eat normally before your appointment. Continue taking all medications unless your doctor has told you otherwise. Because your eyes will be dilated, arrange for someone to drive you home — especially if this is your first visit. Wear comfortable clothing, and leave valuable jewelry at home. If you wear contact lenses, you may want to bring your glasses as well, since contacts may need to be removed for certain tests.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I bring to my first appointment?+

Please bring a valid photo ID, your insurance card(s), a list of current medications, any relevant medical records or imaging from your referring doctor, and sunglasses (your pupils will be dilated).

Will my eyes be dilated?+

Yes, for most retina appointments we will dilate your eyes so our doctors can get a thorough view of your retina. Dilation typically lasts 4–6 hours. We recommend bringing sunglasses and arranging a driver if possible.

How long will my appointment take?+

Most visits last between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the tests needed. Visits that include injections or laser treatments may take a bit longer. We recommend planning accordingly.

Do you accept my insurance?+

We accept most major medical and vision insurance plans, including Medicare and Medicaid. Please call our office at 410-686-3000 to verify your specific plan before your appointment.

Do I need a referral to see a retina specialist?+

Many insurance plans require a referral from your primary eye care provider (optometrist or ophthalmologist). We recommend checking with your insurance company beforehand. If you are experiencing an emergency, please call us directly.

What are anti-VEGF injections? Do they hurt?+

Anti-VEGF injections are the most common treatment for conditions like wet macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. The eye is numbed with anesthetic drops before the injection, so most patients report only mild pressure. The procedure takes only a few minutes.

How often will I need to come in for treatment?+

Treatment frequency depends on your specific condition. Anti-VEGF injections are often given monthly at first, then extended as your condition stabilizes. Your doctor will create a personalized treatment schedule based on how your eyes respond.

Can I drive myself home after my appointment?+

Because your eyes will be dilated, your vision will be blurry and light-sensitive for several hours. We strongly recommend having someone drive you home, especially for your first visit.
