Advancing Patient Comfort in Retinal Care
On May 6, 2026, the Elman Retina Group presented landmark research at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) annual meeting in Denver, Colorado. Moshe Horowitz and Michael J. Elman, M.D. shared their findings on "The Association between the Development of Corneal Abrasions Post Intravitreal Injections and Dry Eye Disease."
Key Findings: Dry Eye and Intravitreal Injections
Intravitreal injections, such as anti-VEGF therapies, are a cornerstone treatment for conditions like macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. While generally very safe, some patients occasionally experience temporary discomfort or corneal abrasions following the procedure.
The research conducted at the Elman Retina Group investigated the underlying factors contributing to this discomfort. The study reported that cases with corneal abrasions after intravitreal injections had significantly higher odds of a prior dry eye disease diagnosis compared to controls.
These crucial findings provide actionable insights that will enable retina specialists worldwide to proactively identify high-risk patients, optimize pre- and post-injection lubrication protocols, and ultimately improve patient comfort after intravitreal injections.
The Prestige of the ARVO Annual Meeting
The ARVO Annual Meeting is widely regarded as the largest and most prestigious organization in eye and vision research. Attracting over 12,750 researchers from more than 80 countries, it serves as the premier global gathering for vision scientists to showcase cutting-edge research. Membership and participation at ARVO are highly valued, reflecting a commitment to advancing the field of ophthalmology.
