Uveitis: When the Immune System Targets the Eye
Uveitis is a group of inflammatory conditions that affect the uvea — the middle layer of the eye that includes the iris, ciliary body, and choroid. It can cause redness, pain, blurred vision, and, if untreated, permanent vision loss. According to the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), uveitis accounts for approximately 10% of blindness in the United States, making it a significant cause of preventable vision loss.
Dr. Daniel Brill is a dual-fellowship trained specialist in both uveitis and vitreoretinal surgery — a rare combination of expertise that allows him to manage even the most complex inflammatory eye conditions. His research contributes to the medical community's understanding of how and why ocular inflammation occurs.
Multicenter Clinical Research
Dr. Brill co-authored a multicenter retrospective study, indexed by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in RETINA, one of the leading peer-reviewed journals in the field. The study examined heterogeneous patterns of ocular inflammation, analyzing both de novo (new-onset) and recurrent cases across multiple clinical sites. The research found that anterior uveitis was the most common presentation, and that most cases resolved with observation or standard steroid therapy.
This type of multicenter research is valuable because it aggregates data from many patients across different practice settings, providing a more comprehensive picture of how inflammatory eye disease presents and responds to treatment than any single center could offer.
Additional Research Contributions
Dr. Brill's published work extends beyond this study. His research portfolio includes:
- Studies on endogenous endophthalmitis detection through ophthalmology consultation in at-risk hospital inpatients
- Research on advanced OCT angiography imaging in differentiating choroidal conditions from uveitic masqueraders
- Real-world outcomes data on newer anti-VEGF treatments for neovascular age-related macular degeneration
He has presented his findings at major national and international conferences, including the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO), the American Society of Retina Specialists (ASRS), and the American Uveitis Society.
Expert Training for Complex Cases
Dr. Brill's dual-fellowship path — uveitis and ocular immunology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, followed by vitreoretinal surgery at the Cincinnati Eye Institute and University of Cincinnati — gives him a unique perspective in treating patients whose inflammatory conditions intersect with surgical retinal disease. He was honored as Fellow of the Year by Massachusetts Eye and Ear residents, reflecting his clinical and teaching excellence.
